A floating horsehair canvas covers the chest and the lapel, then stops at roughly chest level; below the transition the panel is fused. The canvas is not glued to the face cloth, so the chest can move independently of the wool and settle into the wearer over a season. The lower panel does not need that freedom, which is why half canvas exists at all. The cutaway shows exactly where the changeover falls.
